Why are NiMH AA Batteries Better Than Li-Ion AA?

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH HR6) technology remains the best, safest, and most cost-effective alternative to alkaline batteries. Unlike the increasingly popular lithium-ion AA batteries, NiMH batteries do not require a built-in voltage converter, which can generate electromagnetic interference and negatively impact the operation of some devices. Therefore, NiMH batteries are the most optimal power source for devices such as speakers, radios, microphones, sound recorders, and cameras.

Another advantage of NiMH batteries is the gentler and less flat discharge curve, which significantly impacts their usability. During discharge, the battery voltage remains stable for a longer period, and in the final phase, it drops more quickly, which is properly signaled by most devices.

In the case of Li-ion AA batteries, the voltage drops sharply at the end of the discharge cycle, causing the powered device to suddenly shut off without a low battery warning. The flat discharge curve also makes it difficult to effectively determine the charge state of such a battery, as even a battery charged halfway will still show the same voltage (e.g., 1.5V).
